Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT)

CBIT (Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach designed to help individuals manage tics associated with disorders like Tourette syndrome.

CBIT combines elements of habit reversal training and exposure with response prevention, with the goal of reducing the frequency and intensity of tics. The therapy involves:

  1. Awareness Training: Individuals learn to become more aware of their tics and the feelings or situations that trigger them.

  2. Competing Response: A new, competing behavior is introduced to replace the tic.

  3. Relaxation Techniques: Stress and anxiety can make tics worse, so relaxation techniques like deep breathing or mindfulness are often incorporated to help manage stress.

  4. Habit Reversal: This teaches individuals to recognize the urge to tic and replace it with a more socially acceptable response, preventing the tic from occurring.
