Frequently Asked Questions

This FAQ section answers common questions about mental health services, including therapy and support. It is designed to help you understand how therapy works, what to expect in treatment, and how to get started so you can make informed decisions about your mental health.

Getting Started With Therapy

Therapy may be right for you if you are feeling overwhelmed, stressed, anxious, stuck, or struggling to manage emotions, relationships, or life transitions on your own. It can also be helpful if you have specific goals you want to reach, such as improving communication, building coping skills, increasing motivation, or creating more balance in your life. Many people also seek therapy for personal growth or to better understand themselves, even if they are not in crisis. If something in your life feels persistently difficult or you have goals you want support achieving, therapy can provide structure, insight, and tools to help you move forward.

The first therapy session is focused on getting to know you and understanding what brings you in. Your therapist will ask questions about your current concerns, background, and goals for therapy. A key part of the first session is beginning to build a comfortable and trusting therapeutic relationship, since feeling safe and understood is an important foundation for effective therapy.

Getting started typically begins by reaching out to schedule an initial appointment or free 15 minute consultation (https://healthandperformancenj.com/contact-us) . From there, you and a member of our team will discuss your goals, needs, and what support might look like moving forward.

What Therapy Sessions Are Like

A typical therapy session involves talking with your therapist about what has been going on recently, exploring thoughts and emotions, and working toward your goals. Sessions are collaborative and guided by your needs, meaning the focus may shift depending on what feels most important that day.

The length of therapy varies depending on your goals and needs. Some people attend short-term therapy focused on specific challenges, while others engage in longer-term therapy for deeper personal growth.

Most people start with weekly or Biweekly ( every other week) sessions, especially in the beginning. Over time, the frequency may decrease based on progress and goals.

Billing, Insurance & Scheduling

No, we are an out-of-network provider and do not directly bill insurance companies. Payment for service is required at the time of session. However, we can provide a superbill upon request, which you may submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement depending on your plan’s benefits. We recommend checking with your insurance provider to understand your specific coverage for out-of-network mental health services.

Most therapy sessions are approximately 45–60 minutes long, depending on the type of service and individual needs. Session length and frequency can be discussed during the initial appointment to determine what approach best supports your goals and schedule.
